Played quarterback before but new to flag football? Maybe you’ve been a flag football player for a while, just not in the quarterback position. The following are basic flag football pointers for beginning quarterbacks to give you a strong start:
Get a ball that’s perfect for you.
Sounds simple, but maybe not always. You won’t need those big leather bricks used in tackle football, so get a kind that makes you absolutely comfortable. High school or college size, light or heavy, leather or composite and so on – choose whatever floats your boat.
Have your own QB style rather than copying another’s.
There are countless plays you can explore out there. Try them all! There will be those you’ll love and those you’ll hate. In flag football, things can be quite different. You learn and master them all through trial and error. Allow your own style to develop and embrace it. But of course, you can always learn the general lessons from others who have been successful.
Keep in mind this isn’t tackle football.
This is a crucial point to never overlook.
No one is going to hit you, stepping into a pass or disrupting a timing route with the press coverage. Otherwise, it will be a penalty (it should be) and you have a first down. If you’re smart, you’ll make that work for you.
Master your situational football.
You may still have a coach until now, telling you what to run and when to go for it. But do you know who your coach should be now? You! You are the captain of the field. It is upon you that everything rests, from calling your plans to performing them. Know what you should call in and in what circumstances. A 3rd and 5 play will be worlds away from a 3rd and 15. If you only have 5 yards on first, what would your second down play call be? You have to know both the time and score too. It will become easier later on but in the beginning, you need to make the effort as with all kinds of successes in this world.
Play as often as you can.
This may be self-explanatory. The more you play, the more chances you have of improving your game. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. Almost every day, there will be leagues and tournaments. You don’t have to go broke or break your marriage for this, but whenever you can play, do it. Just go online and take a look at the calendar to know the leagues and tournaments in your area.
